Ah, democracy. Riddled with flaws, yet the best government system we've come up with.
I've thought about joining a political party recently (well, maybe not, because, unless it's the Labour party, my parents will more than likely throw me out the house). But, I've decided I don't want to, ever. Politics itself is hugely counter-productive and riddled with stupidity. Because politics is influenced by everyone in the country equally - whether it's a binman or a professor of economics - it's filled with more inaccuracies, ignorance and blindless-emotion than any other subject field. Often, it's not a question of what will benefit the country or economy the most, but what will benefit the party or hurt the opposition the most.
Take the recently approved fiscal charter: it's completely pointless and potentially damaging for the national economy and it's only purpose is to gain from the general population's misguided views on government debt. The vast majority of the population have no clue that the UK government is paying record low interest rates or the importance of infrastructure or government spending on the wider economy long-term, they'll have no idea that the UK has a productivity crisis, they'll have no idea that UK government investment is at two decade lows. But, instead they think we need to, and to quote Osborne, 'fix the roof while the sun is shining'.
Same goes for ideology. Studies have shown that a person's ideology can be rooted in their actual brains. A person's level of empathy, paranoia and patriotism all hugely influence someone's political views. It's why views are often past down for generations causing huge party strongholds in certain areas. All this is undoubtedly fascinating but to have a country run by people elected based on these characteristics is dangerous. It means Trump can get popular by putting #MakeAmericaGreatAgain everywhere. It's why Corbyn can get elected by talking about poor people a lot. Little of it is based on actual meaningful policy, it is based off people's emotions.
